Understanding these risk factors can empower you to make lifestyle changes that can reduce your chances of developing the condition:
- Weight and Insulin Resistance: Carrying excess weight, particularly in the abdomen, can make your cells resistant to insulin.
- Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can lead to higher blood sugar levels and insulin resistance.
- Ethnicity and Genetics: Certain ethnic backgrounds, including African and American Indian, may carry a higher genetic predisposition to diabetes.
- Hormonal and Reproductive Health: Conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and a history of gestational diabetes can elevate your risk.
- Family History: A genetic link to diabetes in your family can increase your susceptibility.
Taking steps to address these factors, such as maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and monitoring your blood sugar, can make a significant difference in your long-term health.
Embrace proactive wellness today to reduce your risk and enhance your quality of life.
Understanding Diabetes:
Diabetes is a condition where the body struggles to manage blood sugar (glucose) levels. Normally, the hormone insulin helps control glucose after you eat. When this process doesn't work properly, blood sugar stays high, leading to diabetes.
Types of Diabetes:
- Type 1 Diabetes: The immune system attacks the pancreas, so it can't make insulin.
- Type 2 Diabetes: The body makes insulin but doesn’t use it well. The pancreas tries to produce more insulin, but eventually can't keep up, causing high blood sugar. This can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, and kidney issues.
